MY TURN: Election report card nets good grades for education

The majority of North Idaho residents support education. It’s an inescapable conclusion after examining the Nov. 5 general election results. Voters made their voices heard in key decisions impacting local education provided by North Idaho College and the Coeur d'Alene School District.

Crucial work remains to ensure every school has the leadership, resources and financial support it needs. The Lakeland Joint School District still faces an uncertain future. As North Idaho Republicans, let’s continue championing educational excellence for young people.

North Idaho College board of trustees election

First, voters saved NIC. North Idaho Republicans are proud that our community selected candidates committed to stability and sound governance. These newly elected trustees — Rick Durbin, Eve Knudtsen and Mary Havercroft — reflect the values of responsible conservative leadership. Their strong leadership is crucial as NIC approaches an accreditation review next spring. An accredited college provides students with the certifications and credentials they need to participate in strengthening our local economy. The future looks brighter for our community with trustees who will work to save NIC.

Coeur d'Alene School District levy

In Coeur d'Alene, the community showed overwhelming support for renewing the supplemental levy, which did not increase taxes. Voters passed the levy with a 61% approval rate. This is a victory for our students and families who know the community is committed to giving each child an opportunity for success.

America succeeds when it invests in the next generation. Our brightest minds cannot be left behind. The levy passage ensures critical programs and services remain available to students, promoting a well-rounded education experience that empowers them to succeed in today's world. North Idaho Republicans value the stability, efficiency and targeted support this levy provides.

Lakeland Joint School District levy

While the Coeur d'Alene levy succeeded, the Lakeland Joint School District’s proposed two-year, $9.52 million-per-year supplemental levy narrowly missed the mark, with 49.4% in favor. It is time to listen to voter concerns. We should listen to the voter feedback and encourage the Lakeland Joint School District to make the adjustments necessary to secure majority support for another levy request in the spring.

While many of us are mindful of taxpayer burdens, supporting a new levy for Lakeland is a wise investment. Well-led schools support Republican values of self-reliance, hard work and success. Thriving schools prevent juvenile delinquency. Schools build responsible citizens. Schools are essential to a strong community.

As North Idaho Republicans, let’s continue championing educational excellence. Together, let’s work to bring a revised proposal for the Lakeland Joint School District that addresses community concerns while providing necessary support for our schools. In the coming months, North Idaho Republicans need to rally around Lakeland’s trustees, educators and students and suggest the necessary changes for the future of our kids.

As we look forward to 2025, we’re asking our local legislative representatives to prioritize education funding for our public schools (K-12) and colleges and universities. Our community is counting on you.
