Trump wins Idaho’s vote for president
Update: This story was last updated at 9:40 p.m.
The Associated Press has declared former President Donald Trump the winner of Idaho in the 2024 presidential election.
The Associated Press declared the winner of this race when polls closed statewide. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, Trump had at least 60% of the vote in Idaho, compared to Democratic candidate Kamala Harris who received 37% of the vote, according to latest data on the Idaho Secretary of State’s website.
This means all four of Idaho’s electoral votes will go to Trump. The candidate who receives the majority of the country’s 538 electoral votes – or at least 270 of the votes – wins the presidential election.
This does not come as a surprise. In 2016, Trump received 59% of Idaho’s votes, and in 2020 he received 64% of the vote, according to data from the Idaho Secretary of State’s Office.
And in March, Trump won Idaho’s Republican caucus with 85% of the vote, beating Nikki Haley by more than 28,000 votes, the Idaho Capital Sun previously reported.
Latest data from the Idaho Secretary of State shows that no counties have fully reported their votes, with so far 155,480 Idahoans voting for Trump, and 95,659 for Harris. Idaho had nine candidates on the presidential ballot, including five independent candidates.
The outcome of the 2024 presidential election may not be determined on Election Day, and may take additional time to be finalized. In 2020, the high number of voters using absentee or mail-in ballots led to millions of backlogged ballots nationwide, causing delays in reporting results in several swing states, according to the Pew Research Center.
