STATE VOLLEYBALL: Lakeland still in hunt in 5A; Coeur d'Alene, Genesis Prep bow out

IDAHO FALLS — The top-seeded Lakeland Hawks remained in the hunt for a state championship with a pair of consolation-round victories in the state 5A tournament Friday at the Mountain America Center. 

In loser-out matches, Lakeland defeated fifth-seeded Middleton 30-28, 25-18, 25-15, then beat second-seeded Pocatello 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20. 

Lakeland (23-12), assured of a trophy for a top-four finish, plays No. 7 Wood River (23-16) today at 8 a.m. PDT, with the loser finishing fourth. 

Idaho Falls (27-12), the third seed, and eighth-seeded Twin Falls (18-15), which beat Lakeland in the first round on Thursday, meet in the semifinal match today at 10 a.m. 

Against Middleton, Ziya Munyer had 15 kills and six blocks for Lakeland. Landree Simon had 11 kills and 12 digs, Alyssa Ryckman nine kills and 12 digs, Addy Jo Hocking 12 digs, Olivia Zazuetta 39 assists, Lexi Levesque three aces. 

Against Pocatello, Munyer had 21 kills, three blocks and two aces, Simon 17 kills and 22 digs, Ryckman 16 kills and 10 digs, Zazuetta 51 assists and 19 digs, Hocking 31 digs, Levesque 13 digs. 


6A 

IDAHO FALLS — Coeur d’Alene won one consolation match on Friday, then lost its second one and bowed out of the state 6A tournament at the Mountain America Center with a tie for fifth. 

The sixth-seeded Vikings eliminated seventh seed Rocky Mountain of Meridian 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, then fell to fourth-seeded Centennial of Boise 22-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 18-16. 

Against Rocky Mountain, Gianna Callari had 16 kills and four blocks for Coeur d’Alene, which finished 27-8. Kaylee Paulson had 15 kills, Lizzy Hardy 21 assists, Hannah Shafer 21 assists, Gracie Legg 28 digs and five aces, Paisley Goings 17 digs, Bridget Maiani three aces, Bevin Green three blocks, Aiva Reed three blocks. 

Against Centennial, Goings had 16 kills, 16 digs and two aces for Coeur d’Alene. Callari had 11 kills, Paulson 10 kills, Kaydence Green 10 kills and five blocks, Hardy 26 assists, 14 digs and two aces, Shafer 19 assists, Legg 37 digs, Maiani 14 digs and two aces, Reed seven blocks. 

“The girls came out firing this morning in a great team win against Rocky Mountain to stay alive in the tournament,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We ended on a heartbreaking loss, but girls showed tremendous fight and left everything they had on the court. We couldn’t be more proud of their effort and commitment this season.” 


2A 

JEROME — In its first trip to state, eighth-seeded Genesis Prep notched its first win at state with a consolation round victory over fifth-seeded Wilder 19-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16, then bowed out of the 2A tourney at Jerome High in a tie for fifth with a 20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-15 loss to third-seeded Hagerman. 

Genesis Prep, which took top-seeded Troy to five sets in the first round Thursday, finished 14-11.
