State high school volleyball tournaments: Top-seeded Lakeland upset in 5A first round

IDAHO FALLS — If Lakeland hopes to win a state volleyball title for the first time since 2020, the Hawks made the road a little bit harder on Thursday.
Lakeland, the top seed, was swept by eighth-seeded Twin Falls 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 in the first round of the state 5A tournament at the Mountain America Center.
The Hawks (21-12) dropped into the consolation bracket, where they will face fifth-seeded Middleton (29-9) in a loser-out match today at 10 a.m. PDT. Middleton lost to fourth-seeded Bonneville of Idaho Falls in four sets. Bonneville (21-15) will face Twin Falls (17-15) in a second-round match today at 2:30 p.m. for a berth in the semifinal on Saturday morning.
If Lakeland beats Middleton, the Hawks will play tonight at 7 in another loser-out match.
Senior Ziya Munyer had 13 kills, six blocks and two aces for Lakeland against Twin Falls. Landree Simon had seven kills and 14 digs, Alyssa Ryckman nine kills, Olivia Zazuetta 31 assists and eight digs, Addy Jo Hocking 13 digs, Lexi Levesque 11 digs, Raygen Dutton four kills.

IDAHO FALLS — The sixth-seeded Coeur d’Alene Vikings fell to the third-seeded Owyhee Storm of Meridian 25-11, 25-19, 25-15 in a 6A first-round match at the Mountain America Center.
Senior Paisley Goings had six kills and nine digs for Coeur d’Alene (26-7), which drops into a consolation-round match today at 8 a.m. PDT vs. Seventh-seeded Rocky Mountain (26-11) of Meridian, which was swept by second-seeded and defending (5A) champion Madison of Rexburg.
If the Vikings win, they would play another loser-out match tonight at 5.
Madison (33-2) faces Owyhee (27-4) in a second-round matchup of teams who both own victories over top-seeded Skyview of Nampa this year. Skyview (26-5) plays Centennial (30-4) today in a second-round match.
Gianna Callari had five kills and an ace for Coeur d’Alene against Owyhee. Lizzy Hardy had nine assists, Hannah Shafer seven assists and two blocks, Kaydence Green two blocks, Gracie Legg 11 digs.

JEROME — The Genesis Prep Jaguars, in their first state volleyball tournament match in program history, nearly pulled off the second 8-vs.-1 upset on the tourneys’ first day.
The eighth-seeded Jaguars won the third and fourth sets to force a deciding set, before falling to the top-seeded Troy Trojans 25-13, 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 15-8 in a first-round 2A tournament match at Jerome High.
Genesis Prep (13-10) will play fifth-seeded Wilder (16-2) today at 10 a.m. PDT in a consolation (loser-out) match. A win would advance the Jaguars to another loser-out match tonight at 7.
Troy (30-2), winners of the last three state titles, faces No. 4 Oakley (22-12) in a second-round match today.
