FIGURE SKATING

Lake City Classic: Over the weekend of May 17-19, the Spokane Figure Skating Club and our Learn to Skate USA (LTSUSA) Program, Lake City Figure Skating, hosted its annual Lake City Classic competition at the Frontier Ice Arena in Coeur d'Alene.

This year the event hosted over 190 skaters from all over the United States with 35-plus hours of competition over three days.

For the past two years the Lake City Classic has been a U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) Excel Series qualifying event. USFS started the Excel Series in 2019 to provide a more attainable track of competitive skating for skaters who are not bound for U.S. Nationals or located in an area with training centers. This track has spurred on a new commitment of figure skating in the Inland Northwest, allowing skaters to find a path that will lead them to the Excel National Festival.

This year Spokane FSC, which calls Frontier Arena its training home, will be sending Ella LeClaire (Cheney) and Peyton Schultz (Hayden) to Boston for the 2024 Excel National Festival. Meanwhile, Chloe Hewitt-Nord (Athol), Lily Joubert (Hayden) and Maeve O’Toole (Post Falls) are awaiting their seeding results to see if they have qualified for Boston.

The 2024 Lake City Classic hosted 370-plus starts, ranging from LTSUSA basic skills-USFS Senior Ladies, Adult skaters of all levels, Ice Dancers, Showcase skaters and four Theatre on Ice Teams. Showcase competitors could also qualify for USFS National Showcase Championships which will take place in San Jose, Calif., this summer.

Figure skating is seeing a resurgence in the Inland Northwest, organizers said. Spokane Figure Skating Club, and its LTSUSA Program, Lake City Figure Skating are teaching over 400 skaters annually in its group lesson program in Coeur d’Alene at Frontier Arena and CDAonIce as well as in Spokane at the Ice Ribbon in Riverfront Park.
