LEGION BASEBALL: Mangini helps Lums walk off with first victory in finale of season-opening tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. — It was a case of better late than never for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen on Monday morning.

Coeur d’Alene scored the game's last five runs, capped by a two-out, walk-off RBI double by Owen Mangini to beat the Helena Senators 7-6 in the Lums' final game at the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Day Tournament at Ogren Park.

Austin DeBoer struck out seven in 6.2 innings for Coeur d’Alene (1-3), which trailed 6-2 in the middle of the sixth inning.

“It was just a gritty game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “We got into a deficit early on, but Austin battled his butt off. Our bats kind of woke up at the end of the game.”

Coeur d’Alene loaded the bases in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Kolbe Coey to make it 6-5 Senators before Ty Shepard tied the game at 6-6 on a sacrifice fly.

Travis Usdrowski, who finished with three RBIs, scored on Mangini’s game-winner.

“It was a heck of a rally to tie it in the sixth, then to win it,” Taylor said. “This is the vision that we had of this team more so than the last three games. Helena’s a good program and we stayed right with them. Now, we know we can play with anybody and beat anybody.”

Coeur d’Alene hosts the Spokane Cannons at Thorco Field on Thursday.
