A run to remember

COEUR d’ALENE  — For 3.1 miles, Chris Moore of Coeur d'Alene carried an American flag Sunday.

The Navy veteran didn't do it for himself.

"Some people didn't make it back," he said. "Brothers and sisters, this is their weekend, not my weekend.

Moore was joined by his daughter, Ella, and mother Debra in the 5K of the Coeur d'Alene Marathon that finished at McEuen Park on Memorial Day weekend.

"I’m so proud of him," Debra Moore said.

Craig Gulledge of Wichita Falls, Texas, who is in the Air Force, also carried the Stars and Stripes, this one through the full 26.2-mile marathon.

It was tough, he said, "but never as tough as what our fallen brothers went through. Carrying a flag is nothing compared to what they went through."

Gulledge completed the marathon in 3 hours, 47 minutes and 13 seconds, but said his run was about honoring those who died for their country.

"It’s not about me carrying the flag, it’s about them," he said.

Nearly 3,000 runners —  a record —  registered for either the marathon, half marathon,10K or 5K. With cool, cloudy skies, conditions were close to ideal for the races that offered views of Lake Coeur d'Alene from the North Idaho Centennial Trail.

The event is a fundraiser for the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation.

Mike Horgan of Philadelphia won the marathon in 2:31:27, followed by Ryan Seguine of Whitefish, Mont., in 2:53:44.

Dustin Langevin of Post Falls was the top local finisher in 3:19:09, while Nathan Funston of Coeur d'Alene finished in 3:19:13.

Hailey Watkins of West Richland, Wash., led the women's field in 2:54:44, while Isabel Silva of Pasco, Wash., was second in 3:10:30.

Jamie Tweedy of Coeur d'Alene was third overall and the top local finisher in 3:23:27. Samantha Fountain of Hayden was the next top local in 3:32:36.

Seguine said he picked up a bug from his kids just before the race and that zapped his energy.

"The last time I ran a marathon, I had pneumonia. This time I had a cold," he said, laughing.

Still, he was happy with his first time running the Coeur d'Alene Marathon.

"I liked the course. It was tough," Seguine said.

Chris Jordan of Boise crouched down and caught his breath after pushing hard to finish the 5K in 35:02, 10 minutes faster than his goal of 45 minutes.

"I think my best time in a 5K in about 12 years," he said with a big smile.

Jordan credited his marathoner friends for motivating him to run strong to the end.

"They were really pushing me," he said. "They wanted to see me hit my goal."

Jason Heineman of Richland, Wash., finished the full marathon in 3:12:20. Not as fast as hoped, but "life got in the way of training," he said.

He didn't even mind when another runner asked him to take their picture before he even had a chance to find the refreshments.

"We’re all here to enjoy ourselves," Heineman said.

Cade Remsburg of Philadelphia said he drove through Coeur d'Alene recently, saw the beauty of the area, and returned for a Memorial Day weekend visit. While here with his girlfriend, he ran the marathon in 3:22:15.

"For me, running a marathon is part of a visit," Remsburg said.

Jessica Tiengo of Pullman was beaming with joy as she was greeted with hugs at the finish line by friends Kelsey Erwin and Bonnie Brown. All three are moms, nurses and ran the half marathon.

"We just wanted to take a minute for ourselves," Tiengo said. "We did amazing. It’s really nice to get out there and do something."
