Kootenai County Democrats to host presidential caucus
COEUR d'ALENE — Registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters are invited to the Kootenai County Fairgrounds between 5-8 p.m. May 23 to vote. They will decide who Idaho will support for the Democratic nominee for president of the United States.
In addition to President Joe Biden, candidates include Dean Phillips, Jason Palmer, Marianne Williamson, David Olscamp, and Armando Perez-Serrato.
Although run by the Idaho Democratic Party, the presidential nomination process will look as similar as possible to a primary election, according to a press release.
After checking in, voters will sign a form confirming they did not participate in the March 2 Republican presidential caucus. Voters will then be given a paper ballot with two check box questions: who they support for president of the United States and which local Democrats they would like to send as a delegate to the state convention.
“The Kootenai County Democrats and volunteers are working hard to make sure we have a successful caucus,” said Kootenai County Democratic Party Chair Evan Koch.
He said voters can check in, cast their ballot and leave.
Those who wish to register to vote, or affiliate with the Democratic Party, can do so at the caucus.
"The Idaho Democratic Party has taken steps to ensure Idahoans, including U.S. military members serving away from home, can participate in the caucus process," a press release said.
Absentee ballots are available to voters who cannot participate in person due to military service, disability or illness, work, child care obligations, school, inability to travel or other reasons.
Democrats can request an absentee ballot at idahodems.org/caucus. The last day to submit a request is Friday.
