FAST FIVE Tess Reasor: 'By coming together, we can create lasting change'

Meet Tess Reasor, a dedicated advocate for social justice and community empowerment.

With a passion for making a difference, Tess has devoted her career to addressing issues of housing insecurity and helping people in the community who are struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders through 208 Recovery.

Driven by a deep-seated belief in the inherent dignity of every individual, Tess is the executive director at HomeShare KC, a pioneering platform that connects people in need of housing with those who have space to share. Through her innovative leadership, HomeShare KC (homesharekc.org) has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals facing housing challenges.

Tess' commitment to social change extends beyond her work with HomeShare KC. She is actively involved in community organizing efforts, advocating for policies that prioritize affordable housing and substance use and co-occurring disorders. Her tireless advocacy and unwavering dedication have earned her recognition as a driving force for positive change in her community.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Tess is an avid outdoor enthusiast. She finds inspiration in nature and enjoys spending time hiking, camping and exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. 

1) How much traction has HomeShare KC gained since its inception?

HomeShare KC has made significant strides since its inception in 2022. We've seen a growing number of individuals who need to find safe and affordable housing, which can be done through our platform. Our success is not just measured in numbers but in the lives positively impacted by our services. With each successful match, we're building stronger communities and are offering hope to those facing housing challenges.

2) What are some new ideas or ways of managing the housing crisis that you find doable?

In tackling the housing crisis, I believe in exploring innovative approaches such as micro-housing solutions, community land trusts and incentivizing homeowners to finish areas of their home to open up spare rooms. These approaches not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility within neighborhoods. Additionally, implementing policies that prioritize affordable housing. 

3) Why do you care about the housing issue, and why should the community care?

The housing issue is a matter of basic human dignity. Everyone deserves access to safe and stable housing, yet many in our community struggle to afford it. By addressing housing insecurity, we're not only ensuring individuals and families have a roof over their heads but also promoting overall well-being and strengthening our community. It's a collective responsibility that affects us all, and by coming together, we can create lasting change.

4) What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Something that might surprise people about me is my eclectic mix of hobbies. On one hand, I have a passion for extreme sports, finding exhilaration in activities like whitewater rafting, skydiving and dirt biking. On the other hand, I'm equally enthusiastic about nurturing life through gardening, finding peace and fulfillment in tending to my plants and creating vibrant green spaces. It's a contrast that reflects the diverse interests and experiences that shape who I am.

5) What is your overall vision for North Idaho and why?

My vision for North Idaho is one of inclusivity, sustainability and prosperity for all residents. I envision vibrant neighborhoods where people from all walks of life can thrive, supported by accessible housing options, quality education and economic opportunities. By fostering a sense of community and collaboration, we can create a region that embraces diversity, protects its natural resources and builds a brighter future for generations to come.
