5A, 4A REGION 1 MEETS

COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeland High junior Ziya Munyer knows she’s operating on borrowed time, one way or another.

As the defending state 4A triple jump champion, she knows her time as reigning champion could soon be coming to an end.

As well as her time as a high school student.

Munyer, who won the 4A triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 3 ¾ inches last year at Mountain View High in Meridian, verbally committed to play volleyball at Weber State last November. Munyer is on track to graduate next January, and will enroll in classes in the 2025 spring semester in Ogden, Utah.

“Last November, when I verbally committed, I thought, ‘what if I go early,” Munyer said. “I think it will be really good to get ahead in classes. Being able to work out with the team before the season will be really beneficial as well.”

On Thursday, Munyer finished second in the 4A long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 4 inches at the 4A Region 1 track and field meet at Coeur d’Alene High. Later, Munyer won the triple jump at 34-4.

“It’s my first year doing the long jump, so I’ve had to learn a lot of different techniques between the long jump and triple jump,” Munyer said. “It’s just a different mindset and being coached through that has been a little bit of an adjustment.”

“Ziya’s got a great work ethic,” second-year Lakeland coach Sarah Nave said. “She set goals for herself at the start of the year and is working on them each day. She hasn’t quite gotten to where she wants to be this year, but I can see her popping at regionals and state for sure.”

Munyer changed her class schedule to get more college credits at the semester this year to be on track to graduate early.

“It feels a little more like my senior year, because I’ll only have one semester left after this,” Munyer said. “It’s sad missing things like the senior prom and being coached by my dad (Jacob). But this is going to be the last of my track and field meets.”

Munyer also had offers to play volleyball at Eastern Washington and Wichita State.

“It just felt right when I went to visit Weber State,” Munyer said. “They’re a really good program and I like the team. All the girls and coaches are amazing.”

At Lakeland, Munyer is 4 inches behind Whitnee Skalskiy (37-8) for the school record in the triple jump.

“I’m still chasing my PR and want to go 38 feet,” Munyer said. “It’s a lot different for me this year. My form has changed, my speed is different. I’m just trying to go into next week with an open mind. I know I’ll have a lot of competition on my back, so I’m just trying to go in and relax.”

Munyer’s season-best was 34-11 ¾ at the Pasco Invitational on April 13.

“I know it’s there and she’s been hard on herself this year,” Nave said. “But I know it’s there. She’s just got to tap into it a little bit. It will be really exciting to see what she does next week as well.”

Her older brother, Ammon, is a redshirt freshman tight end on Weber State’s football team.

“I’m definitely excited that he’s going to be there with me,” Munyer said. “But it’s a great program to be a part of, even if he wasn’t there.”

In 5A, the Post Falls boys and Coeur d'Alene girls lead the team scoring through nine events. Lakeland's boys and Sandpoint's girls lead in the 4A meet. Both the 5A and 4A meets conclude today at Sweeney Track in Lewiston starting at 2 p.m.
