Bold-face mention for Miss Nancy
My dear friend and former newspaper columnist, Nancy Harlocker of Dalton Gardens, left this world May 1 after 92 memorable years of life.
From her obituary ... “Born and raised in Honolulu, she graduated from Punahou in 1949, sailed by ship across the Pacific to attend San Jose State University, then returned to Honolulu. Upon returning to the islands, Nancy accepted a temporary writing position with the Honolulu Advertiser where she remained for 17 years writing the newspaper entertainment and social column. 'Nancy Harlocker’s Date Book,' a popular column where Honolulu’s entertainment and social elite sought to be recognized. Her interviews included many dignitaries and celebrities. Nancy told us that work as a columnist was the best job ever because she went to college to party then spent 17 years getting paid by the newspaper to attend parties.”
So here’s a bold-face column mention farewell to Miss Nancy, one our community’s luminaries. Until we meet again, a hui hou.

For the seniors in the Class of ‘24, these last weeks of high school are filled with milestones ... finals, scholarships, parties and proms. As is tradition in this column, here’s a shout out to the Senior Prom Queens and Kings. That moment in time will no doubt be recalled in their glory-day stories to future grandchildren. Congratulations to all!

Words of wisdom from 71 years and 359 days on this Earth ... I wish when I was in my 20s or 30s, I’d been savvy enough to cultivate friends from many generations, but at that stage of life we’re more likely to be surrounded by a tribe of peers of our own age. Reach up and down the generations for friends!
