James 'Jim' Anthony Foley, 88

James Anthony Foley, 88, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away April 23, 2024. Jim, the oldest of 13 children, was born Jan. 7, 1936, in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Canada, to James and Marie (Bariault) Foley. The family immigrated to the United States in 1948.

Jim served in the US Army as a ski trooper from 1954 to 1957. After the Army, he pursued his education and received a bachelor’s degree in economics, a master’s degree in education and his ABD in History. He spent most of his work life as a teacher and a principal. He worked at Houston ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Queen of Peace Catholic School and St. Augustine’s School.

Jim traveled widely and wrote extensively about his adventures. He took long bicycle rides on weekends with his buddies. Jim also went on several charity rides, such as the MS150. His volunteer work included ALS support and various youth activities.

Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra; three stepchildren, Richard Braffett (deceased), Charles Braffett, and Lisa Newman; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His siblings, Patricia Goldberg, Margaret Barron, Mary Hickman, Sally Foley, Dixie Foley and Michael Foley, also survive.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Ian Foley, Helen Foley, Monique Houghton, Kathleen Emily Foley, Kathleen “Sweet” Brooks, Suzanne Foley; and his stepson, Richard Braffett.

Jim’s final resting place will be in the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash.
