VOTING: Important info for May 21 primary

| March 13, 2024 1:00 AM

If you have quit driving and gone to assisted living, and your driver’s license has expired, you need to check on your voter registration to make sure you can vote in the Idaho Primary Election, May 21.

You can look up your voter registration record at VoteIdaho.gov. Enter your name and birth date and it will tell you if and where you are registered to vote. If you are registered to vote at your current address, you can vote absentee or in person using your expired driver’s license. You need to take proof of your current address — a utility bill (not a cellphone bill) or rent receipt.

If you are not registered to vote at your current address, and your driver’s license expired, you need to get an Idaho identification card at the driver’s license office. You can use your expired driver’s license for picture ID. You also need to take a certified copy of your birth certificate and proof of your current address.

Phone the driver’s license office to make an appointment. An unexpired U.S. Passport might substitute for a birth certificate.

Once you have a current state of Idaho ID card, you can register to vote online at VoteIdaho.gov, and request an absentee ballot. You must register Republican in order to vote in their primary election. Unaffiliated voters can pick a party on election day.

Voter registration closes on April 26. You can also register in person on Election Day.
