PREP BASEBALL: Coeur d'Alene splits rainy twinbill with Sandpoint

| March 13, 2024 1:20 AM

SANDPOINT — Junior Owen Field and sophomore Blake Foulk had two RBIs each in the nightcap for Coeur d’Alene in a 13-8 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs to split an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Memorial Field on Tuesday.

Sandpoint notched its first win since 2009 over Coeur d’Alene in the opener, a 13-5 win.

Sophomore Gavin Helms had two hits and two RBIs in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, which rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning.

Coeur d’Alene walked 15 batters in the opener.

“You’re just not going to beat anyone if you’re not effective on the mound,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Offensively, I thought we were good with our approaches all day and some guys were really good at the plate. But you can’t beat teams giving up free 90s. We’ve got some time to clean those things up, and we’re going to expect more from our guys.”

Sandpoint countered with a five-run third inning, keyed by a two-run single by junior Drew Lehman. Sophomore Mason Little had four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs for Sandpoint in the opener.

Helms scored four runs in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (2-2), which faces Rocky Mountain in the North-South Tournament on March 22 at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian.

Sandpoint’s win in the opener was its first over Coeur d’Alene since April 9, 2009, when the Bulldogs beat the Vikings 6-5 in Sandpoint. Coeur d’Alene had won 16 straight. The teams did not play in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Sandpoint (1-1) hosts Post Falls on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
