PREP BASEBALL: Coeur d'Alene bounces back to down Seattle Prep to open season

| March 10, 2024 1:15 AM

YAKIMA, Wash. — In the opener, Coeur d’Alene showed its youth a little bit.

Then, the Vikings grew up a little by the second game on Saturday.

Sophomore Bam Fenter had an RBI double in the third inning, then finished the game with an RBI triple in the sixth inning of Coeur d’Alene's 11-1 win over Seattle Prep at Yakima County Stadium on Saturday.

Sophomore Gavin Helms drove in three runs for Coeur d’Alene against Seattle Prep.

“Both Bam and Gavin played well in both games,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Both had some timely hits and played well defensively.”

Senior Aidan Blanco struck out five in three innings in the win.

“Aidan had a great start and was just really, really sharp,” Karns said. “We got a little bit of a lead and were able to play the way we wanted to. To get our first win, it’s big for them.”

Earlier, Gonzaga Prep limited Coeur d’Alene to three hits in a 13-0 win.

“In the first game, we didn’t do a good job of throwing strikes and got behind hitters,” Karns said. “Gonzaga Prep did a good job of getting into position to strike the ball. I was pleased with our at-bats, but defensively, we looked as we are for a first game.”

Coeur d’Alene (1-1) is scheduled to play at doubleheader at Sandpoint on Tuesday.
