College basketball: Murekatete honored again; Fortier, Ejim earn WCC awards

LAS VEGAS — Washington State's Bella Murekatete, a fifth-year senior from Genesis Prep Academy in Post Falls, earned honorable mention honors for the second straight year as the Pac-12 Conference announced its women's basketball postseason awards, as voted on by the league coaches.
WSU senior Charlisse Leger-Walker earned an All-Pac-12 selection for the fourth time in her career, and freshman Eleonora Villa earned an All-Pac-12 Freshman Team selection.
Murekatete averaged 12.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game which rank 22nd, eighth and 11th, respectively, in the conference. She has shot at a 53.0% clip from the field, which currently ranks ninth in the Pac-12. This season, she has become the all-time leader in program history in career rebounds (952), blocks (184), games played (148), and games started (140).
WSU, the ninth seed, plays No. 8 California today at 2:30 p.m. (PAC12) in the first round of the conference tournament.

WCC WOMEN
Gonzaga's Yvonne Ejim was named the 2023 West Coast Conference Player and Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Lisa Fortier was named the WCC Coach of the Year the league announced Wednesday. Maud Huijbens also won a major award, winning the WCC Sixth Woman of the Year.
Ejim, Kayleigh Truong, Kaylynne Truong and Brynna Maxwell were selected All-WCC First Team. Eliza Hollingsworth was tabbed All-WCC Second Team.
is second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (40.4) and third in the NCAA in assists per game (20.1). GU led the league in scoring at 82.9 ppg and win margin at 22.3. In Conference games only, the Zags finished with a staggering win margin of 30.7 ppg.
The No. 1 seeded Zags will begin the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas on March 11 with a noon tipoff against a foe to be determined.
