STATE 5A THIRD-PLACE GAME: Vikings stall out in second half vs Madison

| March 3, 2024 1:20 AM

NAMPA — Coeur d’Alene senior Logan Orchard hit a 3-pointer that could have shifted the momentum on Saturday afternoon.

By the time he scored his next one, it had — indeed shifted.

Orchard, a signee of NAIA Eastern Oregon in La Grande, hit a 3-pointer to the game at 30-30 midway through the third quarter. His next field goal, a few minutes later, snapped a 13-0 Madison run as the fourth-seeded Bobcats pulled away from the second-seeded Vikings 62-45 in the state 5A third-place game on Saturday at Ridgevue High.

“Logan, he just leads us in that charge and is the most mentally tough kid,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams of Orchard, who finished with 14 points.

Madison stretched the lead to 43-30, scoring the Vikings’ 23-10 in the third quarter.

“They got some easy baskets and made a run,” Adams said. “Then they got hot and that was it.”

Coeur d’Alene (21-5) fell 60-58 in overtime to Timberline of Boise in Friday’s semifinal round in the team’s first appearance at state since 2012.

“Madison, they’re a very good team and could have given Owyhee a run for the title,” Adams said. “They’ve got size, shooters and they just execute really well. It was really tough for our guys to go through that emotion and try to get up and play at noon the next day. Just seeing how that game ended, it was heartbreaking.”

Madison scored the first four points of the game, but had Coeur d’Alene rally on a 3-pointer by Orchard to cut the deficit to 14-13 after the first quarter.

Coeur d’Alene was within a point twice in the second quarter.

“It was really back and forth in the first half,” Adams said. “We play very similar styles and we’re cut from the same DNA. That third quarter, we were just out of gas, both physically and emotionally.”

Coeur d’Alene entered state on a 10-game win streak.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said Adams, in his fourth season at his alma mater. “Just how far we’ve come since I’ve been here has been amazing. From the pandemic, and just trying to get into the gym, to the Lake City super team, the progress has been amazing. You’ve got to have a group of kids that come together, and our seniors did that, bought into what we were trying to do and played the right way.”

Coeur d’Alene won its first regional title since 2011 this season.

“Now, the expectations have changed,” Adams said. “First, it was just having a season. Now, we can check the box for winning the league and going to state. It’s been fun to watch them make those strides. Now, we’ve got to have that next group step up and lead.”

Junior Carter Rupp scored a team-high 16 points for Coeur d’Alene, which finished 21-5.

“It’s heartbreaking and hurts to finish this way, but it doesn’t take away from the last three months,” Adams said. “We just didn’t check that last box.”

Luke Watson scored 16 points for Madison (24-3).
