DUI emphasis patrols begin

COEUR d’ALENE — The North Idaho DUI Task Force will hit the streets and the waterways to stop impaired drivers — but before making any arrests, police hope to prevent them. 

The public can meet the task force at a family-friendly event from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Third Street boat launch in Coeur d’Alene. Law enforcement will be there to answer questions, host demonstrations and share the importance of safe choices and sober driving. 

Last July, 16 people died in impaired driving crashes across the state, including two in North Idaho, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. There were 171 impaired driving crashes during the same period. Local and state law enforcement will carry out enhanced patrols on highways and back roads from July 1 through July 8. 

Between July 4 and 6, area law enforcement agencies will also deploy marine patrols across North Idaho’s waterways to target impaired boaters. 

“With hot weather and an abundance of beautiful lakes and rivers, it’s no wonder boating is one of the most popular recreational activities in the Idaho Panhandle, but it’s not without risk,” ITD said in a news release. “Every year, marine deputies encounter far too many impaired boaters who put themselves and others in danger after a few too many on the water.” 

The consequences of boating while under the influence are much the same as the consequences of driving while impaired. Operating a boat while under the influence carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. 

About 40 boat operators are arrested annually for operating while under the influence, according to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. 

Before partaking in holiday celebrations, authorities advise that people plan ahead for a sober ride home. Hayden-based Watkins Distributing is sponsoring a ride share promotion through Uber for a free ride in North Idaho from July 4 through July 6.
