LEGION BASEBALL: Lums down Spokane Expos, advance to Collide semis

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Owen Mangini hit a two-run double to open the scoring in the top of the first inning for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen in a 16-1 win over the Spokane Expos-Norden 16U in the East Side Collide 18U tournament at Central Washington University on Saturday.

Nolan Christ had a three-run double in the third inning and Charlie Dixon struck out five for Coeur d’Alene (7-9) in the win.

Earlier, Travis Usdrowski scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the seventh to pull Coeur d'Alene within a run, but the Lumbermen stranded the tying run at third base in a 10-9 loss to Kings Baseball Club 15U of Richland, Wash., falling to 1-2 in the tournament.

Braeden Newby had a two-run single in the fifth, finishing with three RBIs against Kings Baseball.

Chase Saunders had four hits and two runs scored for Coeur d’Alene, which faces Merchants Elite 18U of King County, Washington, in a semifinal game today at 10:30 a.m. at CWU. The winner advances to the championship game scheduled for 1 p.m.

Merchants Elite beat Coeur d’Alene 4-2 on Friday in pool play.

OROFINO — Jace Taylor allowed two hits over 6.2 innings, striking out seven for the Mountaineers in a class “A” North Idaho League win against the Merchants at Orofino High School.

Taylor also added a two-run double in the second inning for Northern Lakes. 

In the nonleague nightcap, Parker Holly hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, finishing with four RBIs for the Mountaineers, who fell to the Merchants.

Cooper Lenz and Jace Cooksey drove in two runs each for Northern Lakes (12-4, 9-0 NIL), which faces Camas Prairie in a single game today in Cottonwood at 11 a.m.

LIBBY, Mont. — Chase Sanroman hit a go-ahead two-run double in the top of seventh, Parker Reichart retired the side in the bottom half of the inning for the save, and the 19U North Idaho Lakers put together a five-run rally in the last two innings to defeat the Central Alberta Wolves 10-9 at Lee Gehring Field for their second win of the Libby Big Bucks Tournament.

North Idaho Laker Sage Medeiros led a three-run top of the first inning with an RBI single to left field. However, Central Alberta scored seven runs (two earned) on North Idaho’s Alex Leverich over the next 1 ⅓ innings to take a four-run lead.

In the third, Reichart hit a two-run single to left to cut the lead to two runs, but the Wolves scored a run in both the third and fifth innings and took a 9-5 lead heading into the top of sixth. In the top of the sixth, Mason Little continued his clutch ways, hitting a two-run double to deep center. After a single by Cole Sanroman, Little scored to cut the deficit to one run.

In the bottom half of the inning, Cole Sanroman gave up a lead-off double before getting three straight outs to keep the Lakers alive. He ended up with a final line of 4 ⅔ innings pitched, five hits, two earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Gavin Day hit a double to center and Reichart was hit by a pitch, and after a steal of second and third by Reichart and pinch runner Jorden Tyler, Chase Sanroman doubled to deep center to give North Idaho a 10-9 advantage. With two on and one one out in the bottom half of the inning, Reichart struck out the Wolves’ Ryder Hammer, who finished the contest 2 for 4 with an RBI double and a two-run home run, and got Walker Overwater to pop up to first to retire the side.

North Idaho (10-4) faces the Bitterroot Bucs in the Big Bucks Tournament championship today at 12:30 p.m. PDT.
