A 2024 Lake City High School grad is among Idaho students to receive an Idaho Governor's Cup scholarship.

David Anderson, who will attend the University of Idaho, was awarded a Governor's Cup Academic Scholarship, which offers $5,000 annually, renewable for a maximum of four years.

The Idaho Governor's Cup was established in 1974 by then-Gov. Cecil Andrus. It is a nonprofit organization with a mission to help Idaho kids pursue higher education goals at Idaho's postsecondary institutions. The Governor's Cup began as a small golf tournament and has grown into an annual event with approximately 600 participants. It features golf, shotgun sports, fly fishing and social activities.

Overseen by the 12-member board of directors of the Idaho Governor’s Cup Scholarship Fund Inc., the selection process involved assessing more than 3,000 applicants. Recipients were chosen based on demonstrated dedication to public service, academic excellence, leadership qualities and community engagement.

The program also offers a Career-Technical Education Scholarship that amounts to $3,000 per year for a program duration ranging from two to three years, as well as the Cecil D. Andrus Excellence in Education Scholarship and Jim Schmit Excellence in Leadership Scholarship.

"We are truly impressed by the recipients of the 2024 Governor’s Cup Scholarship," Gov. Brad Little said in a Tuesday news release. "These students have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to their communities and the state, and we are thrilled to see them evolve into Idaho's future leaders."

He expressed his gratitude to those who sponsored or donated to the scholarship program last year.

"Fostering opportunities for these students has consistently been the core mission of the Governor’s Cup," he said. "Being able to continue that legacy is important.”

The 2024 Idaho Governor’s Cup event will return to Coeur d’Alene Sept. 5-7.
