South African wines are top of mind after our thrilling South Africa edition of the monthly pop-up dinners this past Friday. We were swept away by the exciting history and flavors of these remarkable wines and can't wait to share some of the standout bottles we discovered (available for a limited time in the shop). Let's dive into the captivating world of South African wines!

With a winemaking history that dates back over 350 years, South Africa has established itself as one of the most exciting and innovative wine regions in the world. This diverse country, blessed with stunning landscapes and a wide range of microclimates, is home to some of the most distinctive and characterful wines you'll ever encounter.

The origins of South African winemaking can be traced back to the 17th century when the first vineyards were planted by Dutch settlers in the Western Cape region. Over the centuries, a rich viticultural heritage has developed, with unique grape varieties and wine styles emerging from the different terroirs across the nation.

One of South Africa's most renowned indigenous grapes is Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault that was first bred in 1925. This deeply colored, robustly flavored red varietal has become emblematic of the country's winemaking tradition, with many producers crafting world-class expressions of this uniquely South African grape.

The Spioenkop Pinotage from the Elgin Valley is a prime example of the heights this varietal can reach. Crafted from old vines grown on rocky, shale-rich soils, this wine boasts intense notes of ripe black plums, spice, and smoky bacon, supported by firm tannins and a lingering finish. The cool maritime climate of Elgin lends a freshness and vibrancy to the wine.

In contrast, the Arendsig Pinotage hails from the warmer Robertson region. With its opulent, concentrated flavors of black cherries, cocoa, and hints of earth, this robust wine showcases the power and depth that Pinotage can attain in a hotter terroir. The dry heat of the Robertson Valley results in full-bodied, muscular wines with impressive aging potential.

Another standout Pinotage is the Radford Dale Frankenstein from Stellenbosch. This iconic wine, a blend of different Pinotage vineyard parcels, offers a complex array of flavors, from vibrant red fruits to savory notes of charcuterie and leather. The diverse soils and slopes of Stellenbosch lend layers of nuance and complexity to this captivating wine.

While Pinotage may be South Africa's most famous grape, the country's winemakers have also proven their mastery with other varieties, both international and local. One such example is the Mont Blois Keller Colombard from the Breedekloof region. This white wine, crafted from the rare Colombard grape, is a true revelation, with its bright citrus aromas, crisp acidity, and subtle herbal notes. The high-altitude vineyards and diurnal temperature swings of Breedekloof contribute to the wine's vibrant character and refreshing minerality.

Beyond Pinotage and Colombard, South Africa boasts an impressive array of wine regions, each with its own unique terroir and specialties. The sun-drenched Swartland is renowned for its old-vine Chenin Blanc and bold, spicy reds made from Rhône varieties like Syrah and Mourvèdre. The windswept Cape Agulhas appellation excels with crisp Sauvignon Blanc and aromatic whites, while the Constantia Valley, one of the country's oldest wine-growing areas, is celebrated for its elegant reds and luscious dessert wines.

Whether you're exploring the bold, distinctive flavors of Pinotage or discovering lesser-known gems like Colombard, South African wines offer a captivating journey through diverse terroirs, winemaking traditions, and a rich cultural heritage. With each sip, you'll experience the passion and creativity of the country's talented winemakers, who continue to push boundaries and craft wines that are truly unique to this remarkable corner of the world.
