LEGION BASEBALL: Lums finish 2-2 at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON — Chase Saunders went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team beat the River City Athletics 18U Navy of Kennewick, Wash., 12-9 on Sunday at Church Field in its final game of the Dwight Church Memorial Tournament. 

Saunders singled in a run in the fourth inning, singled in two runs in the sixth inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh for Coeur d’Alene (6-7), which finished 2-2 at the tourney. 

Isaac Ziegler and Ty Shepard each had two-run singles to highlight a seven-run fourth inning for the Lums.  

The Lums return to action Friday at a tournament in Ellensburg, Wash.

Northern Lakes falls in title game 

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Northern Lakes “A” team knocked off the previously unbeaten Bozeman Bucks “A” 15-13 in the semifinal, then fell 7-2 to the Billings Cardinals 18U in the championship game of the Howard Rein Tournament. 

In the first game, Parker Holly drove in a pair of runs with a single and a double for Northern Lakes, which trailed 10-3 after two innings. Evan Shanley had two RBI singles. 

The Mountaineers scored nine runs in the third to take a 12-10 lead, with Grant Allaway’s run-scoring single breaking a 10-10 tie. 

Trailing 13-12 after three, Cooper Lenz tied it with an RBI single in the fourth, and Northern Lakes scored on an error to take the lead. 

In the championship game, Northern Lakes was held to three hits and struck out 10 times in the loss to Billings. 

Jace Cooksey tripled in a run and scored on an error in the second inning to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead, but it was all Cardinals from there. 

Northern Lakes (7-3) returns to action Tuesday in Lewiston with a doubleheader against the Lewis-Clark Cubs.
