LEGION BASEBALL: Shepard's single caps Lums' rally at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON — Ty Shepard’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a four-run rally as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Tri-City Titans of Kennewick, Wash., 10-9 at Church Field in their second game of the day at the Dwight Church Memorial Tournament on Friday.

After the Titans took a 9-6 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, Travis Usdrowski led off the bottom of the seventh for the Lums with a double, and scored on a single by Charlie Dixon.  

Braeden Newby singled, and one out later, Kolbe Coey singled in Newby to bring the Lums within a run.  

A groundout moved the runners up to second and third, and Shepard singled to right to score Isaac Ziegler and Coey. 

Usdrowski finished 3 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for the Lums. 

In the first game, Coeur d’Alene trailed by seven runs going into its last at-bat, but wound up bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in an 11-8 loss to the Seattle-based Benz Boys at Harris Field. 

An RBI single by Ziegler gave the Lums a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but Benz scored three times in the bottom half and six times in the sixth to go up 11-4.  

In the seventh, Dixon and Newby singled for Coeur d’Alene. Mark Holecek’s sacrifice fly scored Dixon, and Aaron Gwaltney singled in Newby. Ty Shepard doubled in Ziegler and Gwaltney to pull the Lums within three. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two out, before a strikeout ended the game. 

Coeur d’Alene (5-6) is scheduled to play the RCA 18U Green team today at 1 p.m. at Harris Field.

Northern Lakes splits to open tourney 

BOZEMAN, Mont. — Jace Cooksey had an RBI single and a two-run triple in an 11-run second inning, sparking the Northern Lakes Mountaineers class A team past the Sheridan (Wyo.) Jets 15-6 in their first game of the Howard Rein tournament. 

Evan Shanley also drove in three runs in the game for Northern Lakes, two on a second-inning single. He also doubled in a run in the third. 

Ethan Pecor singled in two runs in the second inning for the Mountaineers, and James Moore, Caleb Mason and Grant Allaway each had run-scoring singles. 

In its second game of the day, Northern Lakes suffered its first loss of the season, falling 13-3 to the Bozeman Bucks “A”. Cooper Lenz went 3 for 3 and scored two runs for the Mountaineers. For the day, Lenz was 5 for 6 with an RBI and three runs scored. 

Northern Lakes (6-1) is scheduled to play the Billings Cardinals 18U and the Missoula Mavericks “A” today as tourney play continues.
