Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre to present 'Fiddler on the Roof'
Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre will present "Fiddler on the Roof" from June 28 through July 7 in the Schuler Performing Arts Center on the North Idaho College campus.
The production will be directed and choreographed by Gary John La Rosa and will feature John Payonk as protagonist Tevye.
At its core, "Fiddler on the Roof" is a celebration of life amid a whirlwind of changing traditions, familial bonds and the quest for a better life. It tells the story of Tevye, a milkman, father and husband trying to maintain his family and Jewish traditions while the world around him changes.
Payonk's career spans nearly three decades on stages across the United States and abroad. A critically acclaimed baritone and actor, Payonk has portrayed over 100 diverse roles in opera, operetta and musical theater. His portrayal of Tevye in Light Opera Works’ production of "Fiddler on the Roof" was particularly praised, earning him the prestigious After Dark Award for outstanding performance in a lead role. Critics and audiences have lauded his performances.
For La Rosa, the musical carries personal significance, marking his introduction to Broadway as a child. His connection to the musical came full circle when he performed in a Broadway revival alongside actors he admired in his youth. Over the years, he has directed and choreographed numerous productions of "Fiddler," including the 50th anniversary gala.
"Fiddler feels personal to so many people in so many different ways," La Rosa said in a May 20 news release.
