Harvey Horton Ekins, 83

Harvey H. Ekins was born May 21, 1941, in New Rochelle, N.Y., and died June 4, 2024, at the Life Care Center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His father was a newspaper reporter and foreign correspondent Herbert Roslyn (HR) “Bud” Ekins and his mother was Ted Catherine (Lowrance) Ekins. In 1950, his father bought the Goldthwaite Eagle Texas newspaper and Harv lived in Texas several years until the family returned to New York.

Harv graduated from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania in 1963 and joined the U.S. Navy.  After Officer Candidate School, he served in the Navy over 10 years, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He served in Vietnam aboard the USS Jennings County (LST846) and was a veteran.

After his Navy service, Harv returned to college at the University of North Florida and earned a Master of Business Administration degree in 1974. His second career began with Atlantic Bank in Jacksonville, Fla., in the Human Resources Dept. developing flexible benefits for employees. He also worked for First Union Bank in Charlotte, Star Bank in Cincinnati and Sun Trust Bank in Atlanta. He taught professional classes for World of Work. Briefly he worked for the Transylvania Community Hospital in Brevard, N.C., as project manager, building doctors’ offices, and he joined Rotary.

He loved all activities outdoors, including hiking, canoeing and golf, and served as Golf Committee chairman for the homeowners at the Sherwood Forest Golf Course in Brevard, N.C.

In retirement, he moved to Idaho, living both in Moscow and Coeur d’Alene. He was married 55 years and is survived by his wife, Grace, and son James P. “Jim” Ekins.

There will be no services or memorials. Please just remember the happy times with Harv.
