MY TURN: Tribe exemplifies 'kindness, generosity and stewardship'
I realize that people are different and that they have different views and beliefs. I respect the fact that they are entitled to their opinion. That being said, I can not remain silent. When is the insanity going to stop? Reading the account of the racial harassment that took place at McEuen Park against students from the Tribal School both saddened and angered me. Adults ridiculing and harassing eighth graders because of their heritage is truly an act of bullying, and the perpetrators are at best, cowards.
Having grown up in Coeur d’Alene, this type of incident becomes personal. This action is not representative of the majority of our residents. The question becomes, what do we do to eliminate the prejudices shown in our community? I don’t know if there is a single solution. Those who hate will most likely continue to hate. Those who are cowards will probably remain cowards, trying to intimidate those they feel are less valuable human beings.
Acceptance, equality and compassion are all important factors, but as is said, you can’t legislate stupidity. We can pursue many avenues to eliminate bigotry, but it is time for all of us to stand up for each other. If you see someone being harassed, don’t remain silent. Shine a light on those committing the act. Expose them for what they are. If one of us is attacked, we are all attacked. Let’s take a stand and make sure all people are treated fairly, regardless of who they are.
I also want to address the fact that this latest incident occurred with members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. There is no group or people who exemplify kindness, generosity and stewardship more than the Tribe. It was only a few weeks ago that the Tribe donated tens of thousands of dollars to graduating seniors from ALL local high schools. The Tribe is a consistent contributor to many charitable causes in our area. They remain stalwarts in ensuring our lands are properly cared for.
While the Tribe has benefitted from outstanding leadership for years, the current Chairman, Chief Allen, is second to none. My wife commented today that Chief must have had an outstanding mother, as he personifies the way we should all act, with class, respect, generosity, sincerity and appreciation. He treats everyone fairly and as equals. He is a man I have the highest respect for. Anyone who calls for our Native Americans to “go back where they came from” is truly an ignorant person.
I offer my support not only to Chief Allen and tribal members but to all who have been harassed for whatever the reason. I ask you all to join myself and others who refuse to let closed-minded people threaten our community.
