Fred W. Shanley, 78
Fred Shanley passed away May 27, 2024. He was born April 27, 1946, in Coeur d'Alene to George and Hilma (Peterson). Fred was the oldest of three children, with brothers Tim and Bob (Vicki).
Fred was the son of a logger who moved to North Idaho and western Montana, where the work was. Fred graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1964, when he joined the United States Air Force. Fred served in the Air Force as an Armament Systems Specialist stationed in Guam during the Vietnam War. Fred then attended a semester at North Idaho College, where he met Shirley (Young) before having their three children, Eric (Nichole), Brenda (Don) and Jennifer.
Fred met Kay Ann (Provancha) and married her in 1977. They were married for 45 years before Kay's passing in 2023. Fred was also Dad to Kay's two sons, Todd (Gail) and Bart (Rochelle) Provancha. He raised his family of five children in Rathdrum, Idaho, on Mallory Road. Fred worked at Safeway stores in Bonners Ferry while in high school and then in Coeur d'Alene as a meat cutter for 37 years. In 1995, Fred and Kay purchased property in Trout Creek, Mont., where they later moved to and spent their retirement. They had many friends.
Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Kay (Jan. 10, 2023), brother Tim, mother and father. Fred and Kay are survived by their children and grandchildren: Todd/Gail (Michaela, Sophia), Eric/Nanette (Ashlynn, Evan), Brenda/Don (Taylor, Brooke, Carter, Abby), Bart/Rochelle (Brendon, Ashlee, Max, Maddie) and Jennifer (Alexis, Ann Marie, Jorja, Sadie, Madison and Macie).
A graveside service will be held at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens on Government Way on June 10, 2024, at 6 p.m.
