LEGION BASEBALL: Weatherhead, Gwaltney pitch Lums to sweep

COEUR d’ALENE — Nate Weatherhead pitched a two-hitter in the opener, and Aaron Gwaltney followed with a two-hitter in the nightcap as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team swept the Mt. Spokane Wild 18U “AAA” squad 11-1 and 12-0 on Saturday at Thorco Field.

Weatherhead struck out six and walked none in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (4-3), allowing a home run in the fifth inning. 

Travis Usdrowski drove in five runs for the Lums, two on a third-inning double. Charlie Dixon drove in three runs, two on a fourth-inning single.

In the second game, Gwaltney struck out seven, walked none and allowed just a two-out single in the first.

Dixon hit a two-run double to highlight a nine-run first inning. Austin DeBoer had an RBI double in the inning, and Usdrowski and Chase Saunders each had run-scoring singles.

Mt. Spokane pitchers walked 16 and hit five in the two games, and the Wild committed nine errors.

Coeur d’Alene returns to action June 10 with a noon doubleheader vs. the Lewis-Clark Twins at Thorco Field. The Lums and Twins are the only class “AA” teams in North Idaho.

POST FALLS — Jace Taylor struck out 10 and scattered five hits, and the Mountaineers “A” team broke a tie with 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Cardinals 16U squad at Brett James Memorial Field.

Northern Lakes (2-0) beat Prairie for the second time in three days, winning 7-4 on Thursday in Rathdrum.

Evan Shanley’s RBI single in the seventh made it 4-1 Northern Lakes. James Moore’s two-run single made it 7-1. 

Jace Cooksey, who was intentionally walked earlier in the inning, delivered a three-run double to make it 11-1, and Eric Wylie’s run-scoring single closed out the scoring.

Taylor walked three. Prairie scored first in the bottom of the first when Gavin Wienker singled in Isaiah Kearney, who led off with a single.

Northern Lakes tied it in the fifth when Moore singled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Caleb Mason.

Northern Lakes returns to action next Sunday against Moscow in a North Idaho League doubleheader in Rathdrum.
