LEGION BASEBALL: Lums advance to AA title game

COEUR d’ALENE — Mark Holecek had four hits in four at-bats, scoring three runs for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen in a 12-8 win over the Twin Falls Cowboys in a loser-out game in the state AA American Legion baseball tournament on Saturday at Halliwell Park.

Coeur d’Alene (22-15) advances to the state championship game for the second straight year, and will face third-seeded Pocatello in the title game today at 10 a.m. If the Lums win, the teams will play again at 1 p.m. for the lone berth to the Northwest Regional tournament next week in Billings, Mont.

Coeur d’Alene has not advanced to regionals since 1979.

Chase Saunders had a three-run single in the third inning for Coeur d’Alene.

Pocatello scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally past the Nampa Chiefs in Saturday’s late game.

Twin Falls, the tournament’s top seed, finished 20-21-1.

LEWISTON — The Lums 17U fought off elimination to beat the Kimberly Dogs in extra innings of a loser-out game at Harris Field.

Coeur d’Alene (25-15) will face either Minico or Buhl today at 10 a.m.

Due to smoke in the area, Saturday’s scheduled was altered due to hazardous air conditions.
