LEGION BASEBALL: Lums 17U, Northern Lakes advance to district championship game
MOSCOW — Aven Adams had a two-run single in a five-run bottom of the first inning for the third-seeded Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U in an 11-4 win over the fifth-seeded Orofino Merchants in a semifinal game in the class A Area A tournament on Saturday at Bear Field.
Coeur d’Alene (22-14) advances to today’s championship game at 11 a.m. against Northern Lakes (31-10). Northern Lakes must beat Coeur d’Alene twice to advance to state beginning Thursday at Harris Field in Lewiston.
The Lewis-Clark Cubs qualified to state as the tournament host.
Tanner Franklin allowed four runs and struck out seven in 6.2 innings for Coeur d’Alene.
Later, Jace Taylor drove in four runs for top-seeded Northern Lakes, which eliminated the Orofino Merchants 17-7 in six innings. Orofino defeated Northern Lakes 4-3 on Friday.
Eric Wylie went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored against Orofino (17-15).
In an elimination game, Jace Taylor singled to score James Moore in the second inning to give Northern Lakes a 2-1 lead, and the Mountaineers (30-10) went on to beat the second-seeded North Idaho Lakers (18-13) 7-5.
Grant Allaway had a two-run single to score Cooper Lenz and Caleb Mason to make it 4-1 in the third.
Mason Little went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Lakers, who rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to make it 7-5 before falling.
