PRESCRIPTIONS: Who exactly are Seniors for Better Care?

| July 19, 2024 1:00 AM

Our freedoms in this country are essential for Democracy to survive. Freedom of the press is enumerated first in our Bill of Rights. It is so placed because it was viewed as so very important. As with all rights each carry responsibility on our part.

What appears like a political challenge to us all, the ad by Seniors for Better Care, calls on senior citizens to oppose Senate Bill 1246. Covering half of page A7 is in reality a simple advertisement. The bill requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to negotiate the prices of 20 drugs under the Medicare prescription drug benefit in 2026 and 40 drugs under the Medicare prescription drug benefit or under Medicare medical services in 2027 and each year thereafter. This same ad also appeared in The Post and Courier Charleston, S.C., with Tim Scott’s photo. The ad is placed by Seniors 4 Better Care.

I could not find any information on who are these seniors. My concern is that this appears to oppose proposed legislation to require price negotiating for drugs. Why would any person, senior or not, object to that process?

Seniors for Better Care has every right to pay for ads in any newspaper. Every newspaper editor has a responsibility to the public to provide some information on the makeup of the group doing the advertising and to label it accordingly. This may be seniors but it reads more like big Pharma senior CEO advocates.
