LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes, Lums open districts with wins

| July 19, 2024 1:10 AM

MOSCOW — After a slow start, the top-seeded Northern Lakes Mountaineers got rolling from the third inning on, and went on to beat the eight-seeded Moscow Blue Devils 10-0 on the opening day of the Class A Area A (district) tournament Thursday at Bear Field.

After Northern Lakes (28-9) scored twice in the bottom of the third inning, Jace Cooksey led off the fourth with a triple, and the Mountaineers scored six in the inning.

Evan Shanley singled in Cooksey, two runs scored on wild pitches, then Jace Taylor added an RBI single. Grant Allaway followed with a run-scoring triple, and Parker Holly delivered an RBI single.

Taylor’s two-run double in the fifth ended the game on the 10-run rule.

“Jace was able to set the tone, and we were able to break it open,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said.

Caleb Mason struck out six in two innings of relief for Northern Lakes.

“We got off to a sluggish start,” Johnson said. “Colin (Killian) did a good job giving us a solid start and keeping them off the scoreboard. Then we were able to get some runs, and Caleb Mason pitched well in relief.”

Northern Lakes plays fifth seed Orofino (18-13) today at 2 p.m. at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.
