Backpack giveaway set for July 28

| July 18, 2024 1:00 AM

Verizon Wireless locations in Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls will give away free backpacks at 1 p.m. July 28.

This is the 12th year for Verizon authorized retailer Round Room's “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway." More than 1,100 TCC and Wireless Zone stores across the U.S. will give away more than $3 million worth of backpacks. Any leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools of each store’s choice.

With backpacks being a higher ticket item on the school supplies list and the average cost of supplies for families being around $900, Round Room said it hopes to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with school for the local families it serves.

This year, in addition to giving away more than 120,000 backpacks, 10 students will be “Golden Ruler” winners, receiving a $100 gift card to purchase school supplies and $1,000 for their schools.

Since its inception in 2013, Round Room has provided more than 1.3 million children with backpacks through this initiative.

Scott Moorehead, CEO of Round Room, said in a Wednesday news release this simultaneous period of giving is a beautiful thing.

“We believe in the power of community and the importance of education, which is why this initiative is so important to everyone throughout the Round Room organization," Moorehead said.

Giveaways will take place at 430 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d'Alene and 3760 E. Seltice Way, Post Falls.
