Darlene Adele Atwood, 87

| July 17, 2024 1:00 AM

Darlene Adele Atwood passed away at her home in Coeur d’Alene on June 29, 2024, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Omaha, Neb., and grew up in Rushville, Ill., where she graduated high school in 1954 and was a champion roller skater. After high school, Darlene moved to Barstow, Calif., to work as a teletype operator for The Santa Fe Railroad. While there, she met Don Atwood of Coeur d’Alene, and they were married in Las Vegas on Oct. 28, 1955.

Shortly afterwards Don was shipped to Germany and Darlene followed soon. They were stationed in Germany for two years where their first son, Michael, was born. Following the military service the family returned to Coeur d'Alene where they had two more children, Tim and Teresa, and then moved to the Spokane River in 1972. Darlene enjoyed water skiing and boating from her riverfront home.

After a divorce, she met Ole Olson, who was her companion in fun until his death in 2016. They enjoyed camping and fishing, entertaining at home and going to The Eagles. Darlene was a member of The Eagles for many years, where she had many good friends. She was an avid reader and created beautiful needlepoint and embroidery. Darlene was employed as a quality control inspector at Clare Pendar in Post Falls and Advanced Input Devices in Hayden, where she retired.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Laurie Atwood; her son, Tim Atwood; and her daughter, Teresa Ferrari and son-in-law, Eric Johnson. She has three grandchildren: Krystin Atwood, Brittani Westerman and Bryan Atwood.

A small memorial service has been held at her home. Special thanks to Hospice of North Idaho and Comfort Keepers, who took such good care of her. A special thanks to Ronnie, Rod, Teri and Teena for the kindness you showed her.

Yates Funeral Home is entrusted with final arrangements. Please visit Darlene's online memorial and sign her guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
