THE FRONT ROW with MARK NELKE: Boyd to be honored; more coaching comings and goings

| July 11, 2024 1:15 AM

New Coeur d’Alene High girls basketball coach Stacy Boyd will be inducted into the Rogers High School Walk of Fame on Sept. 27, honored at Rogers High during a school assembly and a luncheon.

Boyd will also be honored that night at ONE Spokane Stadium at halftime of a football game.

Boyd graduated from Rogers in 1989, lettering in basketball, football and soccer. He went on to play soccer at Whitworth.

Since then, he has been a longtime club basketball coach in Spokane; several North Idaho kids have played on his club teams.

Boyd is one of many people featured on a mural highlighting community members of the East Central neighborhood in Spokane. The mural is located at the Carl Maxey Center at 3114 E. 5th Ave. In Spokane.

According to its website, “The Carl Maxey Center is a non-profit organization that is committed to changing lives and improving the well-being of Spokane’s African American community by expanding the educational, economic and cultural opportunities that are currently available.”

COACHING CAROUSEL: Some five weeks before fall sports practice begins, Post Falls High is looking for a new boys soccer coach.

John Mueller resigned recently, after coaching the Trojans the past two seasons, and three years overall. Mueller accepted a teaching job at East Valley.

Either Mueller or Gabe Lawson (2003-13, 2015-21) have coached the Post Falls boys in the past 21 seasons.

Based on recent results within its classification, Post Falls is dropping from 6A to 5A in soccer for the next two seasons.

• Steve Mills, formerly an assistant golf coach at Post Falls, has been promoted to head coach, replacing Matt Barkley, who resigned to spend more time with family.

Mills was the Post Falls girls soccer coach for five seasons (2016-20).

Barkley was the Trojans’ head golf coach the past two seasons. Previously, he was head volleyball coach at Post Falls for four seasons (2016-19), and has been a girls basketball assistant for the Trojans.

As for what will happen with the bright orange pants he would wear on the sidelines on occasion at Trojan volleyball matches and basketball games ... to be determined.

• Michelle Dansereau is the new swimming coach at Lakeland. The Lakeland grad has worked at the Kroc Center for years, giving swim lessons, etc.

“Real knowledgeable in the world of swim,” Lakeland AD Matt Neff said.

OF THE four largest high schools in Kootenai County, three will have new girls basketball coaches this season.

At Coeur d’Alene, Stacy Boyd replaces Nicole Symons, who coached the Vikings to back-to-back state titles in 2023 and ‘24, and was head coach for five seasons.

At Lakeland, Caelyn Caulfield replaces Tyrel Derrick, who guided the Hawks to the state 4A tournament last year for the first time since 2019. He coached at his alma mater for two seasons.

And at Post Falls, Mike Divilbiss replaces Brian Hall, the former Lakeside boys coach who coached the Trojan girls the past two seasons.

That means the “dean” of coaches in the group is David Pratt, who will be in his second season at Lake City.
