Area open-water swims coming up

| July 9, 2024 1:05 AM

The inaugural Kroc Masters Open Water Swim, an approximately 1.3-mile point-to-point swim around Tubbs Hill, is scheduled for Saturday, July 20.

The race, for ages 18 and older, is from The Coeur d’Alene Resort to Little Sanders Beach (near the 11th Street marina).

Due to the cliffs and lack of beaches, each swimmer must swim with a buoy (which can be borrowed from race organizers). These buoys, tied to the waist, provide grab-onto buoyancy should a swimmer experience unexpected difficulty. Swimmers will be visible much of the time to hikers/swim fans on the Tubbs trail.

*The 29th Long Bridge Swim in Lake Pend Oreille is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3.

The swim is 1.76 miles from the south side of the lake to the north side following the Long Bridge on U.S. 95, ideal for pedestrians to see the swimmers. The swim has grown a lot and now has 300 or more swimmers, including a category for ‘assisted’ swims (using fins or paddles, but no awards).

*The Coeur d’Alene Crossing, which offers a full (2.4 miles) and half (1.2 miles) course in Lake Coeur d’Alene, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 11.

Organized by the Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team (CAST), the course is from south to north, from Arrow Point to The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course.

When the full swimmers reach halfway, the half’ers jump off a cruise boat and swim to shore with the others. ‘Assisted’ swims with fins are allowed (but no awards).
