SPOKANE/COEUR d'ALENE WOOD BAT CLASSIC: Lums toss no-hitter, but lose

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 19U suffered their only loss in Thorco Field Pod play in a most unusual way Friday. 

Aaron Gwaltney pitched a no-hitter for the Lums, but a balk in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed the go-ahead run to score, and the Multi-Sport 360 Navy 18U team, based in Montesano, Wash., eked out a 2-1 victory. 

Coeur d’Alene came back in its next game to beat the North Idaho Lakers 19U team 11-7 to finish 3-1 in its pod, as did Multi-Sport 360 Navy 18U. 

Multi-Sport won the pod due to the win over the Lums. Coeur d’Alene will play the Columbia Basin River Dogs of Moses Lake today at 3 p.m. at Thorco Field as bracket play in the Senior Division begins.

The Lakers, who finished 1-3 in pod play, face the Missoula Impact today at 10 a.m. at Thorco Field. 

Against the Multi-Sport squad, Gwaltney struck out eight, walked three and hit two.  

Multi-Sport scored on an error in the first inning.  

In the fourth, Owen Mangini of Coeur d’Alene led off with a single, and scored on a two-out double by Charlie Dixon. 

In the sixth, Jaxson Wilson walked to lead off, moved up to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch. With two out and runners at first and third, Gwaltney was called for a balk, allowing Wilson to score.  

Liam Karlson struck out nine and scattered five hits for the Montesano squad. 

Against the Lakers, Austin DeBoer hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the Lums to tie the game at 2.  

Mark Holecek added a sacrifice fly, then drove in two runs with a single to highlight an eight-run third. 

Also in the Senior Division, at the Gonzaga Prep Pod, the River City Premier 18U Webb of Post Falls finished 1-3, beating Multi-Sport 360 7-4 and losing 11-3 to Gonzaga Prep AAA. The Premier will play the Expos 18U today at 10 a.m. at Rogers High in Spokane to begin bracket play.

Northern Lakes remains unbeaten in Juniors tourney 

SPOKANE VALLEY — The Mountaineers defeated the Prairie Cardinals Black 16U 8-3 to conclude West Valley Pod play with a 3-0 record, then beat the Asotin County Blues 7-2 to open bracket play in the Juniors Division on Friday. 

Northern Lakes (20-6) will play the Billings Cardinals in a quarterfinal game today at 2 p.m. at West Valley. 

Against the Prairie Cardinals, Parker Holly went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Northern Lakes. He hit a two-run single in the first inning, and an RBI single in the third. 

Caleb Mason was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mountaineers. James Moore was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, and Ethan Pecor knocked in two runs.  

Timothy Howard was 2 for 3 with two runs scored for Prairie, and Bryce Berger drove in two runs. 

Against Asotin County, Grant Allaway struck out six and allowed three hits in seven innings for Northern Lakes. He also went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.  

Holly was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Pecor, Mason and Jace Taylor each had two hits. 

Also in the West Valley Pod, the Prairie Cardinals 16U finished second, then lost 3-2 to the Billings Cardinals in the first round of bracket play. Prairie plays the Asotin County Blues today at 11:30 a.m. at West Valley to conclude tourney play. 

In Post Falls Pod No. 2, the River City Premier 16U Cooper won with a 4-0 record, beating the Bozeman Bucks 8-7 and the Multi-Sport 360 15U Maroon 10-5. River City will play the River City Premier 16U Reese today at 11:30 a.m. at Post Falls High to begin bracket play. 

The Reese team won Post Falls Pod No. 1 with a 4-0 record, beating the Spokane Bison 9-4 and the Lums 16U 17-5. The Lums, 1-3 in pod play, face the Multi-Sport 360 15U Maroon today at 9 a.m. at Post Falls High in a consolation game. 

The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U wound up 3-1 and second in the Lake City Pod, beating Expos-Norden 14-3 and the 509 Outlaws 5-4. The Lums face the Lewis-Clark Bucs today at 10 a.m. at Lake City High in a consolation game.
