SPOKANE/COEUR d'ALENE WOOD BAT CLASSIC: Lums open with pair of victories

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 19U opened the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic on Friday with a pair of victories in the Thorco Field Pod, beating Wenatchee Valley 6-3 and the Calgary Premier Blues 18U 12-4 at Thorco Field. 

In the first game, Owen Mangini delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Coeur d’Alene a three-run lead, after Wenatchee Valley pulled within a run in the top of the sixth. 

Mangini, Chase Saunders and Charlie Dixon all finished with two hits for the Lums, and Mark Holecek drove in a pair of runs. 

Against Calgary, Mangini hit a two-run single in a five-run top of the first for Coeur d’Alene (15-10), and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. 

Charlie Dixon hit a two-run double in the fourth for the Lums. 

Coeur d’Alene leads the Thorco Field Pod with a 2-0 record. Calgary, Wenatchee Valley and Multi-Sport 360 18U Maroon are all 1-1, and the North Idaho Lakers are 0-2. The Lakers lost 6-5 to Multi-Sport 360 and 7-6 to the Calgary Blues. Wenatchee Valley defeated Multi-Sport 360 6-1 in the other Thorco pod game. 

Today, the Lums take on Multi-Sport 360 18U at 4:30 and the North Idaho Lakers at 7 p.m. to wrap up pod play.

Also in the Senior Division, at the Gonzaga Prep Pod, the River City Premier 18U Webb lost twice on Thursday, falling 11-6 to the SEEBA Expos and 14-5 to the Calgary Premier Blues 18U.

Northern Lakes opens Junior tourney with two wins 

SPOKANE VALLEY — The Mountaineers beat the Crew Athletics 14U Black 11-7 and the West Valley Eagles 13-3 in the West Valley Pod in the Junior Division on the first day of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic at West Valley High. 

Against the Crew, Cooper Lenz hit a two-run single in a four-run third inning that increased Northern Lakes lead to 8-3. The Mountaineers had just five hits, but were helped by 11 walks and two hit-by-pitches. Northern Lakes pitchers walked 12. 

Against West Valley, Parker Holly drove in three runs, two on a first-inning double for Northern Lakes. Jace Taylor hit a two-run single in a five-run second inning that put the Mountaineers up 8-0. Taylor finished 2 for 3 and scored three runs. 

Northern Lakes (18-6)  wraps up pod play today at 9 a.m. vs. the Prairie Cardinals 16U. Prairie also started 2-0 in pod play, beating the Crew 14U 3-2 and West Valley 3-1. 

In the Lake City Pod, the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U went 1-1, falling 10-3 to the Wilder Baseball Club and beating Wenatchee Valley 16U 27-0. 

In Post Falls Pod No. 2, the River City Premier 16U Cooper went 2-0, beating the Calgary Blues 19-1 and the Yakima Valley Peppers 7-1.  

In Post Falls Pod No. 1, the River City Premier 16U Reese won both its games, downing Multi-Sport 360 15U Navy 13-1 and beating the Frenchtown Bucks 8-5.  

Also in Post Falls Pod No. 1, the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 16U dropped its opener to the Spokane Bison 8-0, then fell 7-4 to the Frenchtown Bucs.
