LEGION BASEBALL: Allaway swings Northern Lakes past Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — Grant Allaway hit a three-run double in the top of the fifth inning to give Northern Lakes the lead for good in a 9-6 win over the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U team in a class A North Idaho League game at Lake City High on Tuesday.

The hit by Allaway, who also scored two runs, gave the Mountaineers (16-6, 12-2 NIL) a 5-3 lead, scoring Cooper Lenz, Caleb Mason and Jace Taylor. Allaway later scored on an error to make it 6-3 Northern Lakes.

Jace Taylor struck out seven in 6.2 innings for Northern Lakes, allowing four runs — three in the first inning.

“Jace did a really good job of hanging zeros after that first inning to give us a chance,” Johnson said. “The guys had to battle through it and just kept chipping away. They just had to believe they’d get that big hit, and they did in that fifth inning.”

Dylan Cook had two hits and two RBIs for Coeur d’Alene (11-12, 5-4). Vinny Lapresta held Northern Lakes to one run through the first four innings, before the Mountaineers nicked him for a pair of runs in their six-run fifth.

“He did a good job of throwing strikes and it was hard to get any momentum on him,” Johnson said of Lapresta. “We were putting the ball in play, and they were making plays.”

Both teams return to action on Thursday in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic.

Northern Lakes will face the Spokane Crew 14U at 10 a.m., then face West Valley at 3:30 in the West Valley Pod.

Coeur d’Alene hosts the Wilder Baseball Club of Port Angeles, Wash., at 3:30 p.m., then faces the Wenatchee Valley Baseball Club at 6 at Lake City High.
