MY TURN: Ensuring a respectful and inclusive Fourth of July Parade

As the board of directors of the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to oversee the annual Fourth of July Parade. This cherished tradition brings our community together to celebrate our nation’s independence, honor our military and enjoy a family-friendly day. This year, we introduced new guidelines regarding the display of certain symbols and imagery in the parade, a decision that has unfortunately led to misunderstandings and accusations.

Our intention with this policy was simple: to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and respected. In the past, we have received numerous complaints about displays that many found offensive, including Confederate flags, derogatory illustrations, harsh politically-based language and graphic photographs. To address these concerns, we consulted resources from the Heritage Foundation, Brookings Institute, Pew Research Center and the Anti-Defamation League to ensure our guidelines were transparent and fair.

After consideration and consultation, the executive board of directors has made an exception for the religious symbols. We genuinely desire to create a wonderful family-oriented day in Cd'A to honor our military. The original policy was not meant to isolate individuals or be considered an anti-religious policy. We hope that parade participants and attendees will gather to celebrate our nation's birthday with kindness and good cheer.

The backlash we have received is distressing and disappointing, especially for our President/CEO, Linda Coppess, a person of deep faith. Linda and our entire board are committed to fostering a community where everyone can celebrate our nation’s independence without fear of discrimination or exclusion.

Through understanding and dialogue, we can move past this controversy and focus on the true spirit of the Fourth of July: unity, freedom and respect for all. We wish everyone a safe and outstanding Fourth of July.
