PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Waddington ties school record in Lake City romp

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Avery Waddington tied the school record for total points in a game with 34 for the Lake City Timberwolves in an 87-29 win over the Post Falls Trojans in an Inland Empire League game at Lake City High on Tuesday.

Waddington tied the previous mark held by Sydney Butler, who scored 34 points against Cheney on Dec. 16, 2008.

“We just played really well tonight and finished with 25 assists as a team,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “Each game is about that push and preparation for the postseason. We’re working on getting ready for that push for the postseason and a chance at a state title.”

Senior Sophia Zufelt scored 25 points for Lake City (20-1, 9-0 IEL), which hosts Lewiston in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Kayden Allen scored 10 points for Post Falls (7-13, 4-5), which opens regionals on Friday at Coeur d’Alene.

LEWISTON — Junior Kelsey Carroll had 16 points and seven rebounds, and senior Teagan Colvin had 16 points and five boards as the visiting Vikings rolled past the Bengals in the Inland Empire League and regular season finale for both teams.

Coeur d’Alene (15-5, 6-3 IEL) was already assured of the No. 2 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament, and will host No. 3 Post Falls (7-13, 4-5) in the first round on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Lewiston (7-14, 1-8) will be the No. 4 seed, and travel to top-seeded Lake City (20-1, 9-0) on Friday at 6:30.

BONNERS FERRY — Junior Landree Simon scored 10 of her team-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and senior Lila Kiefer added 12 in the final quarter for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Badgers.

Senior Kyla Holte had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Lakeland (9-8), which travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

“Lila and Landree had great aggressive activity for us attacking downhill, while also being very sound defensively,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. “Overall, a gritty win in the middle of our long road trips. I’m really proud of the girls and they fought until the final whistle.”

Freshman Taren Bateman scored 27 points for Bonners Ferry (9-7), which is off until Game 1 of the best-of-3 game 3A District 1 playoff at Timberlake on Monday.

“Bonners did a lot of things defensively tonight that I thought were impressive,” Derrick said. “With the limited rotation they have, they attacked us as good as anybody this entire year. Bateman is a great player who makes the right plays and will be a common name in North Idaho for the next four years.”

Freshman Hannah Hodson had seven points, 14 rebounds and six assists, senior Danica Kelly had 13 points, six assists and five steals and freshman Kenna Brotherton had 10 rebounds for North Idaho Christian (20-2, 10-0 MCL), which travels to Timberlake tonight.
