PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene clinches league title

| January 31, 2024 1:25 AM

LEWISTON — Junior Carter Rupp hit five 3-pointers and poured in 28 points as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings wrapped up their first outright league title in 10 seasons, beating the Lewiston Bengals 70-61 in Inland Empire League play Tuesday night.

Coeur d’Alene (16-3, 7-0 IEL) won the 5A IEL crown outright in 2014. The Vikings shared the 5A IEL title with Lewiston and Post Falls in 2016.

“The kids are pretty excited, when we sat down before the season and talked about season goals, winning the league outright was the first goal, and we checked that off,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “I'm proud of these kids; we’re pretty laser-focused on what we’re trying to achieve.”

Rupp hit four of his 3s and scored 13 points in the third quarter for Coeur d’Alene.

“Carter, boy, when he’s on, and defenses lose him, he is such a weapon,” Adams said. “Hat’s off to Logan (Orchard) and others for finding him.”

Gunner Larson and Kai Wheeler each scored 12 points for Coeur d’Alene, and Wheeler drew praise from Adams for holding Lewiston post Drew Hottinger to two points.

Jordan Bramlet hit four 3s and scored 28 points for Lewiston (11-7, 3-4), and Rylan Gomez added 16.

Adams did not make the trip to Lewiston, having thrown out his back on Monday. Assistant Arnold Brown was the acting head coach. Adams watched the game from home via the internet.

“Hat’s off to Arnold,” Adams said. “I have full confidence in him taking the team down there and winning a road game.”

Coeur d’Alene is idle until playing host to Lakeland on Feb. 9.

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Reese Strawn scored 25 points and the host Timberwolves jumped out to the early lead and held it the rest of the way in the Inland Empire League victory over the Trojans.

“The last game they got off to a real fast start,” and we were playing from behind,” said Lake City coach James Anderson, whose squad lost 72-58 at Post Falls on Jan. 16. “We were able to jump on them earlier this time, and stay in the lead. It’s an easier place to play from against them.”

Sophomore Josh Watson added 12 points and nine rebounds for Lake City (10-7, 2-3 IEL).

“Josh had some really good rolls, and rim runs, and established the paint,” Anderson said. “I thought Reese and Cason (Miller, who had three steals) were phenomenal; both played great floor games tonight.”

Junior Asher Williams made four 3s and scored 22 points for Bonners Ferry (15-3).

“They shot it really well, right from the get-go, and it came from a lot of different areas,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “They just play super unselfish, make the extra pass, and shoot the ball well. It wasn’t fun to watch tonight because it was against us, but if I was watching them play any other basketball team, they would be fun to watch.”

Junior Mason Hensley led Lakeland with 10 points.

The Hawks started all four seniors, including Toby Tebbe, who suffered a season-ending broken leg in the fourth game of the season. He stood on the court for the opening tip, then was subbed out immediately after the tip.

4A Lakeland closes out the regular season with four straight road games vs. 5A IEL opponents, beginning Saturday at Post Falls.
