Edith Durham, 86
Edith Durham (86) resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away Jan. 24, 2024. The world’s most beautiful soul has left the planet and that’s a sad day for all of us. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Donald, brothers Lloyd (JR), and John (Jonny) and nephew James (Jimmy). She was a phenomenal mother, grandmother, wife and sister. She cared for others as they went through illness and disease and never complained or tired. She baked bread and made meals from scratch for her family and anyone who showed up hungry for her entire life. With her nurse’s aide training, she bandaged “owies” for all her loved ones and was a wonderful caregiver throughout her life. She adored her husband and completed her education as a paralegal when she was in her late 40s. She was a long-time resident of Spirit Lake, Idaho, where she was very active in the community and served on the city council.
Edith is survived by a great deal of family and friends, including two children, Betty and David, and daughter-in-law Donna, three grandchildren, Joseph, Virginia and Isaac, five great-grandchildren, Joseph (spouse Tishara), Cole, Israel, Isabel and Ali, one great-great grandson, Jace. She also has a large extended family through the loving care of her foster parents who brought her into their home at age 15, Dr. David and Betty Gregg.
Edith enjoyed live music played by her husband, Donald, who sang and played the guitar and fiddle. She liked adventures, travel, family time and quiet sunny days on mountaintops feeding chipmunks from her hand and could play a good hand of pinochle all night long!
Rest in peace, Dear Mother, and enjoy your journey, you have left us all richer in heart from the kindness and love you’ve taught each and every one of us. The family wishes to thank the EMTs and Benewah Community Hospital for their truly compassionate staff and loving care in the last hours of her life.
