PREP WRESTLING: Coeur d'Alene's White shines at North Idaho Rumble

| January 28, 2024 1:18 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Before they can dance at the state tournament, wrestlers have to show they’ve got the right stuff throughout the season.

So in Saturday’s 14th annual North Idaho Rumble, it was none other than Coeur d’Alene sophomore Rocco White who might have opened some eyes.

White beat Timberlake sophomore Sawyer Huston in the 98-pound final at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Rocco did a great job all weekend,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He was the class of the weight for sure. He’s having a great season so far. We’ll see what he can do at the big dance, but he’s been really consistent all season.”

Jordan Schield (132) and Colton Tucker (145) finished runner-up for Coeur d’Alene, which finished third with 203 points.

“Jordan wrestled really well, but ran into a two-time state champion (Lewiston’s Hoyt Hvass) in the finals,” Moffat said. “It was good for a freshman in a tough weight class. Colton lost a one-point match to a kid (Caldwell’s Gracin Go) that pinned him at Rollie Lane, so he’s really closed the gap on him. We think Colton can compete with anybody, and we’re happy for him.”

Other Coeur d’Alene placers were Tanner George (third at 120), Boston Spear (fourth at 126), Gabe Larson (third at 160) and Gabe Grassel (third at 182).

Lake City juniors Nathan Booth (160) and Garrett Leonard (182) notched titles for the Timberwolves, who finished fifth with 140.5 points.

“Both Nathan and Garrett were really dominant today,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “They just poured it on all weekend. They’re wrestling great right now, which is what you want to see at the end of the year.”

Lakeland freshman Carson Leonard beat Moscow’s Eian Schwecke by pin in the 113-pound final. Lakeland was fourth with 166 points.

Tanner Piper (138) and Kyle Miller (152) were runner-up for Post Falls, which finished eighth with 119 points. The Trojans, who had won 11 of the previous 13 tournaments, rested a handful of starters this weekend.

Wyatt Carey (106) and Luke Schell (182) were runner-up for Timberlake, which finished sixth with 134 points.

Gavin Walters (fourth at 285), Jeremiah Palmer (sixth at 195) and Shane Sherrill (sixth at 138) placed for Sandpoint.

American Falls won the boys team title with 214.5 points, the first time someone other than Post Falls (11 titles) or Coeur d'Alene (twice) won the tournament.

Draven Johns of Caldwell, who won the 126-pound title, was named outstanding wrestler in the boys tournament.

In the girls tournament, junior Alexxis Johnson (120) and senior Madi Cook (132) won titles for Lake City.

“Alexxis wrestled a really gutty match in the finals,” said Owen of Johnson, who beat Sandpoint’s Emma Garman 3-1. “She fought hard until the end. It was close the entire match. But when it’s close, she’s a hard-nosed kid and know that she’s going to come out on top.”

Cook beat Courtney Hunt of American Falls in the finals.

“That girl was second at state last year, so it was a really impressive win for Madi,” Owen said. “Both of them are just wrestling really well right now.”

Sandpoint freshman Teagan Newsom (138) did not just win an individual title; she also was named the girls tournament’s most outstanding wrestler after upsetting her opponent in the championship match.

Newsom, en route to gold, pinned Rylann Lewis of Bonners Ferry in the semifinal (2:46) and then defeated Hayden Palmer of Moscow via an 8-6 decision in the championship match.

“Teagan came back with purpose today and fought for every point,” Sandpoint coach Valerie Johansen said. “We are incredibly proud of this freshman.”

Following Newsom was Emma Garman (120) who finished second after notching three wins on the weekend. Mackenzee Donenfeld (100), Hunter Edmondson (107), and Lilli Marti (235) all finished third. Sylvia Becker (165) finished fourth after picking up three wins in a tough bracket.

Lakeland’s Annika Thompson (160) was also an individual champion.
