Norma Carney, 91

| January 27, 2024 1:00 AM

Norma Jane Porter Carney died peacefully Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, in Hayden Lake, Idaho. She was born March 28, 1932, to Harold and Etta Porter in Merced County, Calif. The family later moved to Walton, Ore., where she grew up with her sister, Ruth (Lee), and two brothers, Merle (Reba) and Herb (Ortie). She attended Warner Pacific College, where she met Jimmie Lee Carney. They were married July 18, 1952. They had five children together, Steve, Roger, Curtis, Winnetta and Sean.

They started their life in Twin Falls, Idaho, and moved up to Washington in 1962. There, they lived in many different places, including running a Boys Home at Kachess Lodge on Snoqualmie Pass, Wash. In 1965, they relocated to the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, area, where most of the family still resides. Jim and Norma later divorced.

She later met Don Dickson and started a new journey. With his love for travel, she was able to see a lot of the world. His family soon became like her own and they welcomed her with open arms. They were like her own children to her and by her side even after Don’s death.

Norma was known for her love of travel, cooking and needlework. She made her female descendants’ bride dolls when they got married as well as crocheted dolls for her great-grandchildren. Involvement in the Christian Women’s Alliance and singing in the Sweet Adelines in her younger years showed her love of God and music. She had a love for angels that led to a lifetime of collecting. They would be displayed throughout her house at Christmastime.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Etta Porter, and siblings Ruth, Merle and Herb. She is survived by her children, Steve (Jan), Roger (Julie), Curtis (Lana), Winnetta (Wellbe) and Sean (Jani), along with the Dickson children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren between the two families.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Yates has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. Please visit Norma's online memorial at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com and sign her guestbook.
