PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland gives Sandpoint a battle again, before falling

| January 20, 2024 1:15 AM

RATHDRUM — The Lakeland Hawks jumped out to a 23-16 halftime lead, but the Sandpoint Bulldogs rallied in the second half against them for the second time this month, downing the Hawks 49-41 in the girls Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Hawk Court.

Payton Sterling hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three points with 1:20 remaining, but Lakeland (5-8, 1-5 Inland Empire League) could draw no closer.

Sandpoint senior Karlie Banks scored 33 points, 21 in the second half for Sandpoint (16-3, 6-1), which scored the last 10 points of the game earlier this month to beat Lakeland 53-50.

“She’s on a heater right now,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said of Banks. “There’s no doubt about who the leader of that Sandpoint team is right now.”

Junior Landree Simon scored 12 points, sophomore Karstyn Kiefer scored eight points for Lakeland, which hadn’t played since the Jan. 5 game at Sandpoint.

“We’re playing at a high level defensively right now,” Derrick said. “But offensively, we’re still trying to figure out how to play upper level high school basketball. Offensively, it’s hard to get your rhythm when you don’t get to play a game for two weeks.”

Lakeland hosts Moscow on Monday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Maddie Mitchell scored 22 points and junior Kelsey Carroll added 20 as the Vikings overcame a sluggish first half on senior night to beat the Trojans in Inland Empire League play at Viking Court.

Post Falls (7-11, 4-3 IEL) led Coeur d’Alene (13-4, 4-2) 41-35 at halftime before the Vikings made six 3-pointers in the third quarter, two by Mitchell, and outscored the Trojans 21-7 in the quarter.

Carroll scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

“Senior night’s always weird, because it’s so full of emotions,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “Maddie Mitchell and Kelsey Carroll were outstanding tonight. As a group, we moved the ball well, made the extra passes, we found where we could score. Every senior night I’ve ever coached in, it takes until about the third quarter for us to settle in.”

Coeur d’Alene played without point guard and UNLV signee Teagan Colvin, who suffered a broken hand at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas in December. Colvin played in the Fight for the Fish game last week at Lake City with a wrap on her hand and wrist. Symons said Colvin might not return until the 5A Region 1 tournament begins in two weeks.

Brooklynn Brennan led Post Falls with 18 points. Myckenzee Mitley hit five 3s, four in the first half, and added 17 points. Kailey Walton had 15 points and four assists, and Katie Berg had five rebounds.

“That’s probably the best half we’ve played all year,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said of the first half. “We had a couple turnovers early in the third quarter and panicked, and Coeur d’Alene took advantage of it.”

Hall said with Trojan post Leti Asper sidelined with an ankle injury, Post Falls lacks a post presence necessary to battle a post like Carroll.

“I knew that was an advantage we had tonight,” Symons said.

Murphey, who was 5-of-5 from the 3-point line, was 7-of-8 shooting overall.

“She (Murphey) played a great game tonight,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “The girls were moving the ball around really well and finding the open players.”

Senior Avery Waddington scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter for Lake City (18-1, 7-0 IEL), which topped 80 points for the second time this week. Senior Sophia Zufelt scored 19 points and senior Kamryn Pickford 10 points for Lake City.

“We executed really well offensively tonight,” Pratt said. “It’s been a focal point for us to play good, lockdown defense and we did a good job of that tonight.”
