Recognition program honors vets

COEUR d'ALENE — The Coeur d'Alene Elks, in conjunction with Pappy Boyington Marine Corps League 966, recently donated $5,000 to the Veteran Recognition Program, run by Hospice of North Idaho.

During the recognition ceremony, the veteran is presented with a plaque, a pin and certificate of appreciation for service to our country.

A uniformed military veteran volunteer calls the room to attention and salutes the veteran, who returns the salute, if able.

"This is where everyone in the room is brought to tears," wrote Dennis Dodd, commandant of League 966.

The veteran patient then engages in conversation, if able, and speaks about their service in the military.

Veteran recognition ceremonies are held at the home of the veteran under Hospice care or at the Hospice House where the veteran is a patient.

To donate: Marine Corps League, Dennis Dodd, 208-952-6725; Elks Exalted Ruler Molley Barr, 208-772-4049 or Hospice of North Idaho's Jennifer Everett, 208-772-7994.
