PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings win one on the move

| January 17, 2024 1:20 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Even local basketball games were affected by the cold snap on Tuesday.

A pipe burst above the locker rooms Tuesday afternoon at Coeur d’Alene High’s Jordan Court, the former home of the Viking basketball teams.

Since they had to shut the water off at the school to fix the pipes, Tuesday’s home games (varsity boys, varsity girls and three sub-varsity games) vs. Lewiston were moved to Woodland Middle School.

There, Logan Orchard scored 15 points as Coeur d’Alene beat the Bengals 52-40.

“It wasn’t that bad, aside from the fact it wasn’t a home game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “It was little like a neutral court game. Give credit to admin and the Woodland folks (for helping out).”

Carter Rupp scored eight of his 10 points in the first quarter for Coeur d’Alene (12-3, 3-0 IEL), which finished 16 of 16 at the free-throw line.

“It was just kind of an ugly game,” Adams said. “But defensively we settled in and locked down.”

Jordan Bramlet scored 16 points for Lewiston (9-5, 3-2), which travels to Lake City on Friday.

Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to play host to Post Falls on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Trojans rode a fast start to an Inland Empire League victory over the Timberwolves at The Arena.

Senior Neil McCarthy hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter for Post Falls (11-4, 3-1 IEL), which jumped out to a 25-15 lead after one quarter. He had 14 points at the half, as the Trojans led by double figures the rest of the way.

Alex Shields added 14 points, Connor Carver 12, Trenton McLean 11 for Post Falls, which finished with nine 3s, five of them in the first quarter.

“I thought all those shots were good shots,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They weren’t rushed; they were pretty much wide open. And the majority of them, somebody made the pass or the extra pass to get them open. Lewiston kinda smacked us in the mouth (65-45 on Friday in Lewiston), we got a big pie of adversity shoved down our throats at Lewiston. We played with way more intensity (tonight).”

Tyras Blake had five rebounds for Post Falls, and Shields, Carver and Asher Bowie grabbed four each.

“We’ve had that problem too many times,” Lake City coach James Anderson said of the first quarter. “They came out hot; they made a lot of 3s early, and kind of put us on our heels. We’ve been struggling with urgency; we’re not the most urgent team when we see something happen … we’re new together, we’re young, and figuring out little steps to move forward.”

Reese Strawn had four 3s and scored 20 points for Lake City (8-6, 0-2), and McLean was pleased to hold the Timberwolves to seven made 3s.

On Friday, Lake City is home vs. Lewiston, and Post Falls travels to Coeur d’Alene.

RATHDRUM — Senior Ben Ryan had 11 of his game-high 17 points in the first half, finishing 5-of-5 from the free-throw line for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Wildcats at Hawk Court.

“We did a good job of getting the ball inside and Ben really got us going,” said Lakeland coach Tony Hanna of Ryan, who also had 13 rebounds. “Our size gave them some fits tonight.”

Junior Ben Roth added 12 points for Lakeland (8-5), which hosts Sandpoint in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game on Friday.

“Everyone contributed and did a good job when they got in there tonight,” Hanna said. “We’ve been rotating a lot of guys in the lineup trying to keep guys fresh, and we really don’t mind going deep.”

Freshman Porter Lewis scored 12 points for Kellogg (4-9), which hosts Grangeville on Friday.

“They had 21 offensive rebounds for 22 points, and it’s tough to win when you’re giving up that many second-chance points,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “Lakeland made some plays and hit some shots. I thought we played well in the half-court defensively, but we just couldn’t finish those possessions with clean rebounds.”

He showed up tonight and was fine.”

Senior Liam Hendrickx scored 17 points for Lakeside (8-1, 1-0 SIC), which is scheduled to play at Rogers on Thursday.

“We had five guys in double figures tonight and the kids had a lot of fun,” Twoteeth said. “It was a good game.”
