Michael Kalas, 74
Michael Kalas, a resident of Hayden Lake, Idaho, for 33 years, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2024. He was born April 20, 1949, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Albert and Edna Kalas. Michael grew up in Downey, Calif., attended Downey High School and graduated in 1967 before pursuing higher education at California State University, Long Beach.
In 1984, Michael married the love of his life, Denice Kalas, and together they navigated the ups and downs of life for 39 years. Michael worked as the mint master at Sunshine Minting for over two decades, playing a pivotal role in the company's significant growth.
Always in pursuit of the peacefulness of nature, Michael's love for the outdoors blossomed during his youth, exploring the eastern Sierras. Golfing, road trips and a passion for classic cars filled his leisure hours. However, Michael's greatest joy came from spending time with his loved ones. As a devoted father to Andrea Kalas-Nagel and stepfather to Amanda Nicholson and Alyson Deck, he embraced the role of the ultimate "girl dad." Michael never missed a dance recital, cheerleading competition or softball game.
His family expanded, and Michael warmly welcomed his daughters' spouses into his heart, becoming a proud and loving grandfather to Evan, Andrew and Sawyer. Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Denice Kalas; daughter Andrea Kalas-Nagel and son-in-law Kyle Nagel; stepdaughter Amanda Nicholson, son-in-law Chris Nicholson, and grandsons Evan and Andrew Nicholson; stepdaughter Alyson Deck and grandson Sawyer Deck.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, where Michael received compassionate care in his final days. A celebration of Michael's life will be held later this spring.
May his adventurous spirit and enduring love be forever remembered in our hearts.
