Historical Society annual meeting set for Jan. 24

| January 13, 2024 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — Members of the Post Falls Historical Society, general supporters and anyone interested in learning about local history are invited to attend the society’s annual meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Post Falls Library, 821 N. Spokane St.

Each January, the society shares recent activities as well as possible future community projects. It’s also an opportunity to approve the annual budget and elect or re-elect officers to the society’s board of directors.

Although the board holds monthly meetings and guests are always welcome, the society encourages all members to attend the January gathering.

Guests will have opportunities to meet, mingle, ask questions and sign up for or renew society memberships. All active members in good standing can vote on any presented issues or nominate officer candidates.

The nonprofit historical society began in 1988 and operates the Post Falls Museum on the Post Falls City Hall campus in the 100-year-old Chapin Building.

The society focuses on sharing and preserving local history. It also closely works with other area heritage and local historical organizations including the Museum of North Idaho, Spokane Valley Heritage Museum, Kootenai County Historic Preservation Committee and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

The museum typically opens in May and closes at the end of October. In 2023, the building was closed for most of the season due to contamination issues in the basement. It finally opened for a month once the basement was properly cleaned.

Museum admission is free, although donations are always accepted.

Active historical society members receive free admission to museums and historical centers throughout Idaho that are part of a reciprocal membership program organized by the Idaho State Historical Society. Members also receive regular newsletters.

The society hosts a variety of community activities throughout the year, including providing ice cream during Post Falls Festival in the summer and a fall fundraiser.

The society's board of directors meets the third Wednesday of each month at the museum and via Zoom.
